For projects where color consistency is the priority, such as a corporate logo umbrella or a branded parasol that needs to match a fixed color specification indoors and out, a standard printed or coated fabric is the more predictable choice, since the finished color is fixed rather than shifting with sunlight. Our fabric reaches a water pressure above 5,000 mm, which is a hydrostatic head figure measured on the fabric alone: it tells you how much water pressure the raw material resists before it leaks. IPX5, by contrast, is a rating for the finished product, confirming it withstands a sustained low-pressure water jet from any direction. The two ratings matter together because an umbrella can use a highly waterproof fabric and still let water in at the seams, the ferrule, or any vents, which is exactly what an IPX5 finished-product test checks that a fabric-only rating does not. If your project needs to claim a waterproof rating on the finished umbrella rather than just the fabric, confirm that the construction, not only the material, has been tested.
UPF50+ is a separate measure again, rating how much ultraviolet radiation the fabric blocks rather than how it handles water, and our vinyl-layer sunshade fabric can lower the temperature under it by 3 to 5°C in direct sun. For a dual-purpose sun and rain umbrella, both properties need to be specified together rather than assumed from one or the other.
Our umbrella fabric commonly runs 50 to 80 gsm. Lighter weights in that range fold more compactly and add less bulk to a compact or travel umbrella, which matters for products that are marketed on portability. Heavier weights in the same range carry a bit more body, which can help a larger canopy resist flutter in wind and gives the fabric a firmer feel when it is opened.
Before finalizing a weight, check a physical sample rather than deciding on the gsm figure alone. This fabric has a distinct hand: it creases visibly when scrunched and does not spring back to flat easily, it resists a little when rolled, and it makes a rustling sound when handled. For a premium branded umbrella where the in-hand feel is part of the perceived quality, that texture is worth experiencing directly, since two fabrics at the same weight can still feel different once made up.
