    Wool serge is another fabric option that is tightly woven and dense, making it opaque and suitable for masking and sound blocking in theatrical settings. Unlike velour, serge fabric does not have a nap direction and is typically used in black.     Cut Pile Velvet or Knitted Velour: Choosing by Acoustics and Budget

    Our IFR stage curtain fabric comes in two main constructions. Cut pile velvet gives heat insulation and sound absorption, which is what a drama or lecture venue needs when spoken dialogue has to stay clear and echo has to be controlled. Knitted velour is the more economical option while still giving a strong stage effect, which makes it a practical choice for large backdrops, ceremony stages and productions where the sheer area of fabric needed makes cost per meter matter more than the last degree of acoustic control.

    If the venue relies on natural voice projection or has a known echo problem, lean toward velvet. If the project is mainly visual, covers a very large area, or runs on a tighter budget, velour is usually the more practical choice. Both are available as cut pile velvet, such as our IFR cut pile velvet fabric for stage curtain, and as velour for larger or lower-budget installations.

    Planning Seams for Stage Curtains Wider Than 140 cm

    Our fabric has a maximum width of 140 cm, and large theaters typically reach the required width through fabric splicing, since a main stage curtain or a full backdrop is almost always wider than any single roll of fabric. The detail that makes this workable is fullness. Stage curtains are usually gathered onto a track at a lower fullness than a domestic curtain, commonly around 1.5 times the finished width, both to control the weight of a very large piece of fabric and to keep the drape manageable to operate.

    That gathering is also what hides the seams: when panels are joined and then pleated onto the track, a vertical seam falls inside a fold rather than across a flat, visible face, so it disappears into the fabric's own pleats rather than showing as a line. Plan seam placement together with the pleat layout before cutting, and keep every panel from the same dye lot, since velvet and velour can show subtle shade differences between batches under strong stage lighting even when the difference is invisible in daylight.

    What Pile Height and Color Fastness Mean Under Stage Lighting

    Our fabric has a pile height of 2.5 to 3 mm. A higher pile absorbs more light and sound, which is why pile height is a genuine performance spec for a stage curtain and not just a texture choice, since it affects how much stray light and reverberation the curtain removes from the room. Because pile has a nap direction, the same curtain can look noticeably darker or lighter depending on which way the pile lies and where the light is coming from, so it is worth checking a sample under lighting similar to the venue's own rig, not only under daylight or showroom light, before committing to a color.

    Color fastness on this fabric is rated Grade 3 to 4, and for a stage curtain that detail matters twice over: over a long run under intense, repeated stage lighting, and if the curtain is ever laundered or dry cleaned between productions. For colors under strong or colored stage lighting, or for a curtain expected to serve many productions over several years, ask about fastness to light as well as to washing before finalizing a color.
