Planning Fabric Width for Large and Floor-to-Ceiling Windows

Our IFR linen-like blackout curtain fabric comes in standard widths of 280 cm and 300 cm, with a maximum of 340 cm on request. For a floor-to-ceiling window or a wide glass wall, that width decides how many seams the finished curtain needs and where they fall, since most curtains are made by joining vertical drops of fabric to reach the required width, not by fabric width alone.

Before finalizing a design, measure the full width to be covered and divide it by the fabric's usable width to see how many drops are needed and where the seams will land. Choosing the 340 cm option where it applies can remove a seam from a wide window and simplify the pattern match. Because this fabric has a layered, two-tone texture, keep every drop from the same dye lot so the fuzzy surface and tone read the same across the whole width. For large hotel or commercial projects, confirm the seam plan with your workroom before cutting.

Why This Fabric Suits Pleated Curtains Rather Than Roller Blinds

This fabric is built in three layers, with a black silk core for shading, which gives it more body and weight than a single-layer fabric. That structure is part of why we recommend it for pleated curtains rather than roller blinds. A pleated curtain lets the fabric hang and fold, which is where its soft, fuzzy two-tone texture and visual depth show at their best, and the fullness of a pleat gives the fabric room to drape naturally. A roller blind, by contrast, rolls the fabric tightly around a tube, and a thicker, three-layer construction tends to sit less neatly rolled and can build up more bulk at the head box than a thinner fabric designed for blinds.

If your project needs both a textured, linen-like face and a roller blind format, ask us before specifying, since a lighter construction is usually a better match for that mechanism. For pleated curtains, standard pinch pleats show the fabric's layering well, and the fabric's stability after repeated washing helps the pleats keep their shape over time.

Weighing the IFR Price Premium Against What It Buys

The price premium for IFR fabric over standard polyester is generally within 40%, and it buys three things at once: flame retardancy that is part of the fiber rather than a surface treatment, color fastness rated 4 to 5 on a 5-point scale, and flame retardant performance that holds through up to 60 washes. Color fastness at this level means the fabric resists fading from light and washing significantly better than a lower-rated fabric, which matters most in sun-facing rooms and on curtains that are cleaned on a regular schedule.

Framed against a project's full lifespan, the comparison is less about the sticker price and more about what happens over years of use: a fabric that keeps its color and its flame retardant performance avoids the cost of early replacement or re-treatment, which a lower-cost, non-inherent fabric may need. For projects where the curtains will be laundered regularly or hang in strong sun, the premium is generally worth paying.
