Choosing the Shading Level for IFR Chenille Curtains

Our inherently flame retardant chenille curtain fabric comes in two shading levels: ordinary shading at 50% to 60% and high shading at 80% to 95%. People choose chenille for its soft pile and rich drape, so the shading choice is a question of how much light the room can take. Ordinary shading suits lobbies, lounges, restaurants, meeting rooms, offices and exhibition spaces, where the curtain softens the light and adds warmth. High shading suits hotel guest rooms, sanatorium rooms and bedrooms, where sleep and rest matter and daylight needs to be controlled.

For full darkness, hang the chenille as the visible layer and add a blackout lining behind it. The chenille gives the look and the lining gives the darkness. You can also choose our IFR blackout curtain fabric or fire retardant coated blackout curtain fabric as the main fabric, and our IFR sheer curtain fabric adds daytime privacy.

Keeping Chenille Curtains Looking Their Best

Chenille is a construction rather than a fiber, so care follows what the fabric is made from, and our IFR chenille follows the polyester route. For everyday care, vacuum with a soft brush attachment on low suction, moving along the direction of the pile, and blot spills without rubbing. If the curtains are washed, use a gentle cycle, avoid high dryer heat and air dry. Loose tiebacks and a little space from furniture keep the pile even, and a lining or sheer helps in rooms with strong sun.

The flame retardant in our chenille is part of the IFR polyester itself, so it stays in place when the fabric is laundered as recommended, which is why IFR suits curtains that are cleaned regularly. Store curtains dry when they are not in use.

Making Up Chenille Curtains

Chenille is heavier and bulkier than a flat weave, so plan the making up before you cut. Choose a track or rod rated for the full weight of the finished curtain, including its lining, and leave enough stack space for the folds. Pinch pleats at about twice the track width look rich with chenille's dense pile, and a lining stabilizes the pile, adds blackout or thermal performance and shields the face fabric from sun. When layers are combined, the finished combination is best fire tested as a whole.

Keep the pile direction the same on every panel and cut from one dye lot, because the color can look different with the direction of the pile. For patterned versions such as our permanently flame retardant jacquard chenille curtain fabric, allow extra fabric to match the pattern repeat. Let the curtain hang before final hemming, and steam from the back rather than pressing the face with a hot iron. We match color from a customer sample or a Pantone reference, and standard sampling takes 5 to 10 days.
